Revolution heeft zojuist veertig Ikea tassen gekocht die allemaal gevuld moeten worden met doorzichtige flessen/potjes/vissenkommen/vazen van glas en plastic. Iemand nog een voorraadje of bereid een voorraad te gaan sparen? Kom ik het eind mei ophalen. Frisdrankflessen zijn ook welkom dan sponsor je twee keer een goed doel: 1) het decor van de nieuwe voorstelling van LEF 2) een goed doel waar het statiegeld na de voorstelling naar toe gaat (ik stel voor stichting Fair Chance Nepal).

Revolution zet de waterkoker aan terwijl ze koffie wilde zetten. Vervolgens schep ik verse koffie op de oude drab. Ik ben vergeten boter te kopen terwijl die al bijna een week op is. Wel heb ik broodjes bapao gekocht terwijl ik geen magnetron heb. Ik heb vorige week bij een hele nare colporteur die mij deed denken dat hij van de woningbouw was bijna een nieuw energiecontract getekend terwijl ik dat helemaal niet wilde…

Argggh. Ik geloof dat sinds Vriend niet langer stiekem bij mij woont ik niet langer in staat ben op mezelf te wonen. Ik ben mijn zelfstandigheid en verstandigheid een beetje verloren.

“The prophet who fails to present a bearable alternative and yet preaches doom is part of the trap that he postulates.” (Margaret Mead, Culture and Commitment, a study of the generation gap, 1970, p. xix).

Revolution denkt na over het belang van generaties en zoekt naar alternatieven voor de huidige horizontale samenleving waarin oudere rolmodellen voor nieuwe generaties steeds ontbreken omdat de wereld zo snel veranderd dat iedere generatie in een nieuwe wereld wordt geboren.

Mijn leven gaat op het moment zo snel dat het bloggen er een beetje bij inschiet. Vanaf donderdag wordt het allemaal een stuk serieuzer want dan begint Vriend in zijn heuse echte baan bij de Duits Nederlandse Windtunnels. Toen hij hoorde dat het door zou gaan heeft hij meteen een eigen auto gekocht. En met een beetje geluk vond ie ook nog een appartement in Marknesse om tijdelijk te verblijven (Vriend gaat daarmee back to my roots, want mijn moeder is in dat kleine plaatsje in de Noord Oost polder geboren). Verder is er een dikke knoop doorgehakt: we zoeken samen in Zwolle een appartement om vanaf juli/augustus te gaan wonen. Iemand met een briljante tip wordt getrakteerd op een heerlijk cultureel avondje in deze voor mij nieuwe stad. Mocht je ook nog een baan weten in Zwolle, Amersfoort, Apeldoorn, Utrecht of ergens daar tussen in, waarbij ik over ingewikkelde zaken mag nadenken en ook gewoon met mijn voeten in de metaforische klei kan staan, dan mag je een heel weekend all inclusive komen logeren!

Revolution is het gelukt. Ik doe mee aan het zomerprogramma van Humanity in Action in Amsterdam in juni! Ik rol echt van het een in het ander en dat is bijzonder. Wat zal er uit voortkomen?

Mijn motivatie:

“We need to think beyond the nation state” is the first sentence of the well-known essay by Arjun Appadurai Patriotism and it’s Future (1993). In my master thesis on the Dutch asylum and migration policies I have experienced why. Due to fuzzy and untameable globalization processes the significance of national borders decrease, but at the same time new borders are invented (not only physical but also in people’s minds). We appreciate the flow of goods and ideas around the globe, we welcome expats from multinationals in our countries and we dream of becoming one of those cosmopolites, who travel each day by airplane like it’s a bus trip to the nearest city centre. But we feel threatened by the coming of ‘the unwanted other’: the asylum seekers, the poor migration workers, the refugees who are hoping for a better life. The nation state tries to deal with this unwanted flow of people, by inventing labels for them and by listing criteria for who is allowed to stay and who is not. In the end, to say it blunt, we are protecting our welfare state build on beautiful principles of humanity by denying the ‘unwanted others’ the chance to be fully human. This is a pressing contradiction and there is no easy solution. All I can do is use my intelligence and creativity to learn to think beyond the nation state. Not for the sake of growth in the Gross National Product but for the growth in Gross Worldwide Fully Human Beings.

I like to pass borders, physically but even more metaphorically. I want to discover the world not only by my own map, but by the map of many other people: refugees, migrant workers, minorities… As you can see in my Curriculum Vitae, I like to explore different scientific disciplines. Not with the intention to feel comfortable and safe high above the world in a ivory tower, but to develop broad academic capabilities to use outside the academy, for persons caught up in, or scared about, the untameable flows of globalization. I want to combine my intelligence with an pragmatic action perspective. The summer programme of Humanity in Action would be a wonderful opportunity to help me develop this aspiration.

Binnenkort een foto van een kleine zebra op ski’s in Noorwegen. Revolution was daar een week met ouders, broers en vriend. Het was er prachtig. En stil ook.

En maandag hopelijk informatie over een heel leuk nieuw avontuur.
