Humanity in Action

I’m still digesting all that I have learned and experienced during the whole program. Just some remarks and two pictures that are for me symbolic for the summer school of Humanity in Action:

What I have learned: I’m not guilty of what happened in the past, but I’m responsible for what will happen in the future. The program of HiA gave me the inspiration and enthusiasm to look for creative and alternative ways to enter a future to a world in which people care about each others dignity and the wellbeing of this planet.

And I have learned to see others like they are. When I met the other fellows for the first time I was so stupid to ask a girl from Bosnia Herzegovina to which ethnic group she belonged. She told me that her father had learned her to answer that question by saying: “I’m just Maja”. I have seen Maja, as I have seen the other fellows. I lost a bit of my stereotypes and started to see persons with their own story and their own history. And I felt in love with them.

I’m thinking to start blogging in English, but I love Dutch very much and I can express myself so much better in my own language. So I will make a page on my blog on this month, and I will update this page so that the people I met during the program can follow me on my blog if they want to.

You have to know that I’m still alive, that I had a wonderful time, that I lost some weight due to the hard work and that I now try to relax a bit, write papers and pass exams, to take good care of myself and to find out what my action plans will be for the rest of my life. And that sounds like enough for the coming months… So I conclude with ‘to be continued…’ and I will blog more the coming weeks, I promises.

I’m learning, bit by bit, to see (and accept) myself like I am. That’s why I think you need not refer to yourself as “stupid” just because you asked a question that you wouldn’t have asked “with today’s knowledge”…

You can never be stupid if you learn from the mistakes you make. That’s where mistakes are mend for.
